There are a few websites I use when I’m looking for a good recipe — The Chunky Chef, looking at you — but mostly I turn to YouTube to find my next delicious dish. Or snack. Or some bizarre candy I absolutely do not need but will probably buy anyway.

And I’m not talking about those mind-numbing AI slop channels trying to convince you that glass fruit is food. I’m talking about real people making real recipes, trying real food, and offering tips I can actually use.

I subscribe to quite a few of them, so in the spirit of YouTube Sidequests, I thought it would be fun to take a little trip off-road and introduce you to some of my favorites.

Some cook. Some taste-test. Some do both. One has a rather intimate relationship with his refrigerator.

Let’s eat.

Giovanni Siracusa: Simple, Delicious, and Hot

Okay, I’m not just talking about Giovanni’s cooking skills here.

Just because he’s nice to look at — that HAIR — doesn’t mean I’m not paying attention to what he’s making on the stove — or on the grill when he’s shirtless.

I’m very capable of multitasking.

I don’t even remember how I discovered Giovanni Siracusa. He popped into my feed one day making ciambotta, I liked his style, tried the recipe and was hooked.

And that’s the thing I like about his cooking: it’s simple. No ten thousand ingredients. No fourteen little bowls covering your entire countertop. No recipe that requires three hours and equipment you didn’t know existed.

Just food.

That ciambotta was the bomb and perfect for a hot summer day. His lemon chicken was another winner. I usually make mine with thin slices, but Giovanni uses chunks, and when he said that chicken would be tender, he wasn’t kidding.

A lot of his recipes are quick enough that he’ll show the entire thing in a Short, but he does longer videos, too. Pasta, seafood, meat, desserts, salads — there’s plenty to choose from, and I’ve already got a list of things I want to try.

Sicilian potato salad? Ziti alla Genovese? Lazy tiramisu?

Yes, please.

No glass fruit here, baby. Just real Italian cooking done simple…“Mmmm. So good!”

Cooking at Pam’s Place: Like a Friend in Your Kitchen

Cooking at Pam’s Place is another creator I watch because she doesn’t make cooking unnecessarily complicated.

Her recipes are affordable, approachable and don’t require standing in front of a roaring stove for three hours. Are you noticing a theme here?

But Pam goes beyond recipes. She posts food recalls, kitchen hacks and cleaning tips — including some I’ve actually used — so there’s always something useful popping up in her feed.

She’ll make everything from peach cobbler to meat and vegetable dishes, but what really makes the channel work is Pam. She’s sweet, down-to-earth and feels like a friend hanging out in the kitchen showing you how she makes something.

There is no stuck-up Martha Stewart energy here where you feel like your house needs to pass inspection before she’s willing to enter.

Just kidding.

Not really.

Pam also has the perfect reaction when something turns out especially good:

“Oh, my goodness.”

She’s changed up her video style a little lately, with more close-up cooking shots, music and less of the casual chatter I really enjoyed. Maybe that’s just where she wants to take the channel. Maybe it’s the YouTube algorithm doing whatever the hell the YouTube algorithm does.

Either way, I’m still watching.

Smokin’ And Grillin’ with AB — Comfort Food Done Right

Smokin’ and Grillin with AB makes some of the most delicious-looking food I’ve ever seen on YouTube.

Southern cooking. Barbecue. Comfort food. Crockpot recipes. Wings. Ribs. This is not the channel you visit when you’re craving three leaves of lettuce and a sad tomato.

AB feeds you.

A lot of his recipes are pretty simple, although occasionally you’re going to end up with a counter full of ingredient bowls. Nothing requiring a chemistry degree, but you’ve been warned.

And obviously, if you don’t own a grill or crockpot, some recipes aren’t going to do you much good unless you’re willing to improvise.

But good God the food.

Chili Frito Pie. Southern-style green bean casserole. About a billion varieties of chicken wings. Barbecue ribs practically falling apart if you look at them wrong.

Like the other creators here, AB is down-to-earth and doesn’t act like you need a culinary degree to follow along. That’s exactly how I like my cooking channels.

He also has a food truck somewhere down South, and I’d love to track that thing down someday because if the food tastes half as good as it looks on my screen, I’m there.

Hallie Parrott — The Chicago Snack Queen

If I told you how many snacks I’ve tried because of Hallie Parrott, you probably wouldn’t believe me.

Some of the stuff she finds is nearly impossible to track down because she’s pulling snacks from everywhere — T.J. Maxx, Dollar Tree, HomeGoods and wherever else she happens to wander. See something you want and go looking a week later?

Gone. It’s basically FAST TV licensing with snacks.

Fortunately, plenty of what she tries is easier to find. She introduced me to Skittles Fuego gummies, which they carry at the bodega right by me, and OMG, they’re the bomb.

If I had an endless snack budget, I’d probably order half the crap she tries. Australian marshmallows? Yes. Viral candied salmon? I don’t even know why it looked good, but she made it seem like something I needed right now, even if I’m not a big salmon fan.

Hallie works mostly in Shorts and does themed runs like “disturbing candy” and “old-people candy,” but she isn’t limited to sweets. Cookies, pickles, chips, baked beans, cheesecake — if somebody somewhere has packaged it as a snack, there’s a decent chance Hallie will eventually find it.

And her reactions are what make the channel. She’s funny without feeling like she’s performing LOOK HOW FUNNY I AM! for the camera.

I’ve laughed out loud watching her on my phone on a crowded CTA bus. Yes, people looked at me. Whatever.

As a fellow Chicagoan, I can tell you that Hallie has the true “City of Big Shoulders” grit when it comes to trying questionable bodega candy.

SJohnsonVoiceOvers — He’s Doing That Thing with the Fridge Again

Every time I watch one of the shorts on SJohnsonVoiceovers, I laugh my ass off. Every. Single. Time.

Stefan Johnson is a professional voice actor, and it shows — the man has a remarkably rich, smooth voice. But more importantly, he’s got a massive personality to back it up.

He mostly dominates the shorts feed, though he does have longer videos. Personally, I tend to stick to his shorts unless it’s one of his snack rankings, where the long-form format works. Otherwise, the fast-paced fun factor drops down a bit. That’s not a slam against him, but watching someone try every single frozen pizza brand in a 20-minute video gets tedious. Give me the absolute worst ones — which he delivers superbly — and I’m locked in.

He doesn’t just review snacks; he hits fast food, obscure drinks, and even recreates bizarre recipes he finds scrolling through TikTok. Those are an absolute blast because you get the blueprint along with a blunt, filter-free reaction. If a dish looks like “ass,” he’ll let you know. If it tastes like “ass,” he will also let you know. And if it’s actually good? His refrigerator gets some literal love and kisses. You have to watch him to see what I mean.

He’s hilarious, colorful, and even if you don’t buy a single thing he shares, you’re still gonna feel like you’re part of the party.

Have a “Good Ass Day,” indeed.

That Crazy Sub Guy: Come for the Cheesesteaks, Stay for the Stories

If you like subs, this is your guy.

That Crazy Sub Guy works at Jersey Mike’s making sandwiches all day, so you’d think the last thing he’d want to do when he gets home is make another damn sandwich.

Nope. More subs.

And holy hell, does this guy know his way around a cheesesteak.

He’ll grind his own meat, cook on the grill and show you how to put together a proper sub. He also takes the camera to work sometimes, tries sandwiches from places other than Jersey Mike’s and makes plenty of other food when he isn’t building another cheesesteak masterpiece.

But honestly, the food isn’t even the main reason I watch him. I watch him because he’s funny.

He tells great stories, makes ridiculous faces and has the kind of personality where you can wind up watching a guy make yet another sandwich even though you weren’t remotely interested in learning how to make even one.

That’s the glory of his channel. It’s just fun to watch. Although those cheesesteaks look absolutely fire. Now he just needs to invite all of us over for a sub-a-que.

I’m waiting.

The Final Bite: Come Hungry, Leave Subscribed

The common denominator with everyone on this list: I actually enjoy watching them.

Sometimes I get a recipe I’ll make myself. Sometimes Hallie convinces me I desperately need a snack I didn’t know existed five minutes earlier. Sometimes Stefan is making out with his refrigerator. Sometimes I’m watching a man who makes subs professionally go home and voluntarily make more subs.

And sometimes I’m just staring at Giovanni’s hair.

It’s a diverse ecosystem.

But that’s what I love about wandering around YouTube. You don’t need millions of subscribers, a television production company or some elaborate set to make something worth watching. Sometimes you just need a camera, a personality and something good to eat.

These are six creators who regularly make me hungry, make me laugh, or send me into the kitchen to try something myself. Usually all three.

So if you’re looking for your next recipe, snack obsession or just something fun to watch while you’re eating whatever these people convinced you to buy, give them a spin.

Just don’t blame me when your grocery bill goes up.
