Sometimes Trial by Stream is a planned scouting mission. Other times, it’s the result of accidental Channel Surfing. I was scrolling through Pluto TV’s Channel Guide when I spotted the Supernatural Drama Channel and decided to see what was playing. It dropped me five minutes into Season 1, Episode 17 of Ghost Whisperer.
Starting a series nearly at the end of the first season isn’t usually the move, but on the Free TV Frontier, the Live Lane chooses the show. I loved it so much I stayed for the next one, too. Here’s why Melinda Gordon’s world is pure Fire.
S1E17: The Lori Loughlin “Garage Sale” Meta
The second I saw the screen, I did a double-take. There was Lori Loughlin (playing Christine Greene) selling off some of her household treasures to Melinda Gordon’s (Jennifer Love Hewitt) antique shop. Keep in mind, this was 2006 — seven years before she became the face of the Garage Sale Mysteries on Hallmark. Watching her show Melinda around her home was a brain collision I wasn’t expecting. The episode, “Demon Child,” features a dead son named Daniel who is pissed off at his workaholic mom. He’s moving toys, making creepy clown dolls stare at the baby, and eventually causes the nanny (played by Justina Machado) to tumble backward down the stairs like a scene straight out of The Omen.
The Commercial Break Reprieve
What I love about these FAST TV drop-ins is the pacing. Pluto TV’s commercials are actually digestible. Unlike paid streamers like Hulu or HBO through Prime — where I’ve been hit with commercial blocks long enough to forget what the hell I was watching — Pluto’s breaks are actually digestible. I can grab a snack, check on my cat Lucy (the real-life “Demon Child”), and get back to the couch without the rhythm being destroyed.
S1E18: The “Miss Fortune” Carnival
Pluto rolled right into the next episode, “Miss Fortune,” and I couldn’t hit the off button. We’re at a carnival with magicians, fortune tellers, and enough secrets to fill a whole season of Supernatural.
The ghost this time is a magician who died in a water tank (think The Prestige, but with 2006 network TV charm). He believes his brother and girlfriend were involved in his death, and naturally Melinda starts digging. There are fortune tellers, creepy mannequins, family secrets, a pregnancy bombshell and enough carnival weirdness to keep me planted in my chair.
Melinda has a “reckoning” moment here that reminded me of a Gordon Ramsay show: she confronts the magician, shows him the error of his ways, and helps the family fix mistakes that have nothing to do with the haunting itself. It’s sweet, it’s emotional, and it’s surprisingly relaxing.
The Verdict: A Comfort Show About Dead People
I love the relationship between Melinda and her husband Jim. He’s supportive, he’s funny (wanting to raise a “brood of ghostbusters”), and they have the kind of chemistry that should be on every “Top TV Couple” list.
Ghost Whisperer is a “Comfort Show.” It’s predictable? Yes. Cheesy? Sometimes. But is it enjoyable? Absolutely. It’s the perfect show to stumble onto during a lazy Sunday afternoon. Melinda’s work is powerful, and the web of connections she builds between the living and the dead keeps you engaged even if you didn’t start at the Pilot.
